·: Tea – the Unofficial National Drink of the UK

Articles in English27/11/08
It has always struck me as curious that the chosen hot beverage of most of Europe is coffee, while that of the UK is tea. We drink around 165 million cups of tea per day (and that does not include the millions of Brits who live overseas). Tea is drunk any time of day, sometimes all day. There is a 1920's song which goes:

Articles in English20/11/08
The Javea Players Hill perform Wind in the Willows at Gata’s Unión Musical theatre, from December 1st to the 6th at 20h. This Spanish premier, adapted by Alan Bennett and Cherry Cabban, will help you blow away your gloom and transport you to a nostalgic, funny, make-believe world on the banks of the Thames. You can’t miss it! Tickets are available in Javea Park’s Humpty Dumpty for 12€ (children under 14, 10€).

 ·: America’s “Electoral College” System

Articles in English28/09/08
In July, I entertained XAD readers with a description of the circus known as “primary elections” in the U.S. This month, I’m back to further confuse you with an explanation of how we count the votes in our presidential elections. The system is not quite as crazy as it sounds. It was designed with great care by our Founding Fathers when they wrote our Constitution. Unfortunately, after 220 years, the “Law of Unintended Consequences” is taking its toll. The Electoral College system is now widely criticized as anachronistic and unfair.

 ·: Xàbia's municipal budget for 2008

Articles in English28/08/08
The Councillor of Finance, Vicente Chorro, explained the municipal budgets for 2008 to the Agenda 21 forum. In first place, he accounted for why it had taken so long for the budget to be approved.

Because of the Catastrazo Xàbia is in an anomalous situation. The “Audiencia Nacional” has not yet made a pronouncement following the judgement of the High Court of Valencia that the catastral values are invalid. The property tax (IBI) is based on this document, and at the same time this is the main source of revenue for the municipality (14 of the 35 million total income). The amount will vary substantially depending upon the final decision of the Audiencia Nacional.

·: In the U.S. – Elections before the Elections?

Articles in English20/07/08
Some of my British and Spanish friends have asked me to explain the perpetual campaign (or is it a circus?) that has been going on in the U.S. this year. Isn’t the election supposed to be in November? What have they been voting on ever since January?
